This is the age-old laser lab question. You’re looking at a thing, and wondering if that thing can be turned into a laser. The answer is always yes, if you’re determined enough. You may need to inject it full of fluorescent dye and then pump it hard with another laser. You may need to cool it to cryogenic temperatures and look for the laser signal under a microscope. You may need to put it inside another laser. But you will be getting laser light out of that object.

Can this shirt lase? Of course – given the periodic structures in the woven cloth material, they should provide reasonably good distributed Bragg mirror feedback that will help form a laser cavity. All you need is some gain, which you should be able to provide by soaking the shirt with a well-chosen laser dye. (Pro tip: you may need to bleach the shirt first so that it doesn’t experience too much loss from absorption by the original shirt dye) Then pump it really hard with a laser that matches your laser dye absorption and voila! I never said it would be a GOOD laser.
